Verona: when hi-tech and health go hand in hand for a better quality of life

Verona is the national leader of a project to protect rescue vehicles, patients and motorists in transit. The innovative telematic service is part of the Municipal Project for Road Safety and, after three years of planning, it was finally realized thanks to Regional funding and European funds.

The project is called “VAI 118 - Viabilità Assistita Intelligente” ("GO 118 - Intelligent Assisted Roads") and it works thanks the constant dialogue between two operational centers: the Mobility and Traffic Coordination municipal center, located in Lungadige Galtarossa (Verona), and the Suem 118 Verona Emergenza center (Medical Emergency Service) at the Policlinico of Borgo Roma (Verona).

The telematic system allows to monitor the movements of the ambulances by GPS and to assist them in the emergency need to have the road free from obstacles, serving the green traffic light when the vehicles are close to about 100 meters. With this service, ambulances have a special way to reach their destination safely.

The traffic management system works only in the most serious cases, when the "red health code" is activated. It represents an innovative system, unique in Italy, important not only for urgent care, but also for road safety, to protect motorists during the transit of an ambulance.

Already active on 62 traffic lights, the system will be activated on all 160 traffic lights in the municipal area by the end of 2018.

This example of cutting-edge technological optimization places Verona as a model for all Italian and non-Italian cities. It is a new step forward to make Verona a true Smart City, an intelligent city at the service of citizens for a better quality of life.
