From the farmer to the consumer: “0 km markets” within the province of Verona

According to a recent Eurispes research, 74.1% of Italians prefer Made in Italy products and 80% of respondents opt for seasonal fruit and vegetables. Furthermore, 75.4% of consumers check labels in order to be aware of food origin, some of them mainly pick Dop, Igp or Doc certified products, and some others usually choose local products, called zero kilometer products, which come from places close to where you live (59.3%). Young people seem to be more interested in buying organic food than others.

Italian agriculture may be considered the most green of all Europe: it is the one with the highest number of certified products and the largest concentration of companies that deal with organic farming, finally, genetically modified organisms are not cultivated.

Coldiretti, based on the last European Food Safety Autority (EFSA) report, let us know that Italian agricultural products are much safer than non-European ones concerning the presence of chemical residues. In fact, only 0.3% of Italian products contain chemical residues exceeding the legal limits, that percentage reaches 1.6% when we talk about EU products and becomes 6.5% in the case of non-EU countries products.

The land of Verona is an active and important part of this increasingly dynamic economic fabric. For example, Legnago municipality chose to make its 0 km market a stronger reality, converting an experiment born in 2012 in a solid local tradition, developing a more complete and precise regulation. This new experience will be called Green market, it will include 20 stands, among which 5 will be allocated to organic products: fruit and vegetables, meat, milk and dairy products will be sold, but also eggs and fish. The distinctive feature of the market will obviously be the exclusive sale of the exhibitors products and the fact that local companies will be facilitated in the assignment of spaces.

Legnago is not the only municipality with a 0 km market in Verona: considering only the city there are 10 markets operating on different days of the week, and when you take into consideration all the province they become 16. In a southern district of the city (Borgo Roma), for example, the appointment is every Saturday morning. This market was among the first to be opened in May 2009, offering fruit and seasonal products, meats and cheese, yogurt, sausages, eggs and so forth.
